Check Out the Style Guide Palooza Coming to ACES 2024 San Diego!

Look for an embarrassment of style-guide riches at ACES 2024 San Diego this April. 

• The Associated Press is back, with its “What’s New in AP Style?” session, led by Paula Froke, editor of the AP Stylebook. If you’ve been to an ACES conference this session needs no further explanation. If you haven’t, just know that it always makes news. 

• APA is back, with Timothy McAdoo, a manager on the APA style team, presenting "APA Style Copyediting FAQs, Modern Guidance, and Myths to Avoid," definitive guidance about APA's best style practices. 

But wait, there's more!      

• ACES scores a style-guide hat trick with “What’s New in Chicago Style?” Russell Harper from The Chicago Manual of Style sits down with ACES Board Secretary Mark Allen for a special in-person episode of That Word Chat, Allen’s Zoom-based chat show for lovers of all things lexical. Allen and Harper will discuss what’s new in Chicago style, including the forthcoming 18th edition. 

And more . . .      

• The AP and Chicago presentations will be held at different times on Friday, April 5, 2024. AP will be from 8 to 9 a.m. and Chicago will be held 1–2 p.m. 

And still more!      

• Both AP and Chicago will be stand-alone sessions. No other sessions will be scheduled at those times. They will be held in the Grand Ballroom and everyone can have a seat. No more standing-room only. 

Other style guide sessions

No doubt style guides will be discussed throughout the conference. The following sessions specifically focus on their creation: 

In “Focusing on Document Accessibility: A Style Guide Workshop” Griffin Zimmerman will lead attendees step-by-step through the creation of an accessibility-focused style guide.

Leanne Yuen will present “How to Build an Inclusive Language-focused Style Guide,” which covers everything an editor needs to know, including getting responsible source guidance and collaboration and support from their team and organization.

And if your organization doesn’t have any style guide at all, you might want to take Lorraine Delp’s “How to Build an In-House Style Guide (From the Ground Up).” This session will cover steps, resources, and tips for building an in-house style guide from the very beginning.
