The Bill Walsh Scholarship is one of six awards given annually by the ACES Education Fund to students interested in a career in editing.

The ACES Education Fund awards six scholarships every year to undergraduates and graduate students. In addition to individual cash awards, these scholarships also include financial aid to attend one of the two annual ACES conferences, in-person or virtual.

The application materials for the Walsh Scholarship will be available on this page from August 15 through the November 15 deadline. They ask applicants for a resume, references, a short biographical essay, and responses to editing scenarios.

Walsh Scholarship

The Bill Walsh Scholarship is awarded to an applicant who aspires to edit news and who demonstrates the talent and passion for language that Bill devoted his life to.

Requirements

Applicants for all ACES scholarships must be seeking degrees as enrolled college/university juniors, seniors, or graduate students at the time of the November 15 deadline, and demonstrate an interest in editing as a career.

Process

Application materials for each year's scholarships become available on August 15. The deadline for all applications is midnight on November 15. All entry materials must be in English.

An entrant can apply for both the Walsh scholarship and the other ACES scholarships by submitting a separate application for each, but can receive only one scholarship.

Applications for the 2023-24 Bill Walsh scholarships are closed. We invite eligible scholars to apply for the 2024-25 scholarships beginning August 15. Application directions and materials will open then.
