Sharyn L. Flanagan

Candidate - Board of Directors

Self-Nominated

Whether it’s editing for international news outlets, such as AP and USA TODAY, or daily platform diving at The Philadelphia Tribune – I’m in it. As an editor for 32 years, I've worked 12 at The Tribune and 15 at USA TODAY. I've also edited at the Bucks County (Pa.) Courier Times, Tallahassee (Fla.) Democrat and Lansdale (Pa.) Reporter. I'm a proud Philadelphian and U.S. Marine who uses her time and editing powers for good through service to the Society of Professional Journalists-Keystone, National Press Club, MediaBistro, Philadelphia Writers Conference and National Association of Black Journalists and various ABJ affiliates.

How long has the nominee been a member of ACES?

I have been an ACES member on and off since 2000.

How has the nominee contributed to ACES?

Besides sharing the knowledge from ACES conferences from over the years since 2000, have always encouraged and sponsored ACES memberships.

What experience would the nominee bring to the board?

I have worn a lot of hats over the years. Whether it’s working for international/national news outlets, such as AP and USA TODAY, or putting out daily reports at The Philadelphia Tribune – I’m about getting the job done. I've spent 15 years at USA TODAY and 11 at The Tribune. I've also worked as an editor at the Bucks County (Pa.) Courier, Tallahassee (Fla.) Democrat and Lansdale (Pa.) Reporter. I’m no stranger to board service, having served at The National Press Club, National Association of Black Journalists, Military Reporters and Editors and ABJ chapters in Philly, Tallahassee and D.C.

If elected, what does the nominee envision for ACES during their tenure?

During my tenure I would use my ties to other professional journalism organizations to serve as a conduit for informational networking to the benefit of ACES members. I would also like to found a platform to serve as a soft landing spot for editors when they need to do some self care whether it's for coping with everyday stressors or a devastating job loss. Our industry has seen tough times and the pandemic has made them tougher. It's important that groups like ACES can have members' backs.
