Copyeditor
The Modern Language Association, a nonprofit publisher of works on the study of language and literature, seeks a copyeditor to join its editorial team in the position of assistant editor. The position largely entails copyediting manuscripts on-screen for the association’s book publications. Applicants may be asked to complete a copy test to demonstrate their qualifications.
Responsibilities
• Copyediting book manuscripts in Microsoft Word
• Reviewing and collating corrections for PDF proofs in Adobe Acrobat
• Conducting editorial review for books copyedited by freelance editors
• Generating content for MLA style products, including The MLA Style Center and MLA Handbook Plus
• Copyediting other work produced by the association, including member communications, reports and grant proposals, and marketing materials
Qualifications
• Minimum of five years’ experience in copyediting scholarly or reference publications, or relevant qualifications; experience in copyediting humanities publications a plus
• Knowledge of style and usage guides, especially The Chicago Manual of Style
• Experience copyediting for a university press, scholarly society, or major publisher a plus
• A bachelor’s degree in a field of language or literature is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
• Knowledge of a language other than English preferred
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Google Suite, and WordPress a plus
This is a full-time, mainly remote position, with an in-person requirement when needed at the MLA’s office in downtown Manhattan. You must be able to work legally in the United States. Salary is commensurate with experience, in the range of $55,000–$58,000. The MLA provides generous vacation and sick time, flexible work hours, a 403(b) retirement plan, and individual health and dental plans with no shared premium cost.
