Academic, Nonfiction, Memoirs and Journals
I am an educator, author, editor, and avid backpacker. For over twenty years, I taught Academic Writing and literature survey courses at the University of Maryland, College Park. I have corrected thousands of drafts for spelling, punctuation, grammar, and development. While teaching, I authored two books, The Broad Church: A Biography of a Movement (2003) and The Cambridge Platonists: A Brief Introduction (2005). My major editorial achievement is The Works of Francis William Newman: A Critical Edition, in ten volumes, published in digital format by the Philosophy Documentation Center (2009).
My wife and I have hiked over 1200 miles of the Appalachian Trail, and I have read dozens of memoirs and journals of long-distance backpackers. I recognize a need here for editorial service, and I hope to have the opportunity to copyedit in this genre.
Even so, for a relatively low hourly fee, I am available as a copyeditor and proofreader for any nonfiction subject in the Arts and Humanities. I am comfortable editing in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style and the Modern Language Association.
