Some people work with words. Others help shape how the rest of us understand them.

Kory Stamper has spent more than 30 years doing just that. An editor, author, and lexicographer, she has built a career exploring how English works, how it changes, and how we explain it to others.

During her career at Merriam-Webster and Cambridge Dictionaries, Kory wrote dictionaries, thesauruses, and English grammars, tackling everything from defining complex concepts to explaining grammar for English language learners. She is also the author of “Word by Word: The Secret Life of Dictionaries,” an engaging look at how dictionaries are made and how language evolves.

Today, she works as a senior editor at a government contracting research firm, continues to freelance, and serves on the Miami Nation of Indiana’s Language Council.
