HENRY FUHRMANN MENTOR AWARD
The Henry Fuhrmann Mentor Award honors a journalism mentor who has consistently supported others, shared knowledge, and helped shape careers over time. If someone has played that role in your life, or in the lives of others, submit a nomination.
About the Henry Fuhrmann Mentor Award
Each year, ACES and the Asian American Journalists Association–Los Angeles recognize a mentor who has made a lasting impact on others in journalism.
Named for Henry Fuhrmann, a longtime editor at the Los Angeles Times and a leader in both organizations, the award reflects his commitment to mentorship, generosity, and professional growth.
The recipient receives a $1,000 cash prize.
Why nominate someone (or yourself)
Recognize mentorship that makes a difference
Some careers change because someone took the time to guide, support, and advocate. This award brings that work forward.
Highlight long-term impact
Mentorship is not a single moment. It is sustained support, feedback, and trust over time.
Celebrate people who support others
Many mentors do this work quietly. A nomination is a way to acknowledge that contribution.
Reinforce the values behind the profession
Mentorship strengthens journalism by helping people grow, navigate challenges, and build better work.
Who can be nominated
The award is open to anyone working in journalism.
ACES or AAJA membership is not required.
There is no nomination fee.
You may nominate yourself.
How to participate
Submit the following:
- A resume for the nominee
- A 250- to 500-word description of their approach to mentoring
- Two letters from mentees, including contact information
Send all materials through the nomination form between May 1 and June 15 (11:59 p.m. ET).
How selection works
Submissions are reviewed based on the nominee’s commitment to mentoring, the impact they have had on others, and the strength of the supporting materials.
Judges may choose not to present the award if submissions do not meet the standard.
