FAQ: BOARD NOMINATION PROCESS

What is the nomination and voting process?

The nomination process typically opens one month before the election. Candidates can self-nominate or be nominated by another member.

Voting occurs online over a designated period and lasts two weeks, and all members in good standing can vote.

Results are announced publicly about a month before new Board members begin their terms on July 1.

Board members are elected to serve two years.

What are the eligibility requirements to run?

Potential nominees:

  • Must be an ACES member in good standing for at least one year leading up to the call for nominations.
  • Must have three years of editing experience.
  • Must demonstrate recent active participation in ACES, such as by, but not limited to, the following ways:
    • Volunteering on an ACES committee or task force.
    • Volunteering as a judge for one or more ACES awards, including scholarships and fellowships.
    • Presenting at ACES conferences or in ACES webcasts.

How do I nominate myself or someone else?

Nominations can be submitted via the ACES website. Self-nominations are encouraged.

What information is required in a nomination?

When are nominations open?

The nomination window is April 1-15. Late submissions will not be considered.

Can I nominate more than one person?

Multiple nominations are allowed as long as each nominee meets eligibility criteria.

Are candidates allowed to campaign?

All nominees must review and agree to the Board of Directors Campaign Policy and the ACES Code of Conduct prior to submission. Please confirm that the nominee has read and understand both documents.

What happens after the nominations are submitted?

After submission, candidate eligibility and submissions are reviewed before finalizing the ballot.

When does voting take place?

Voting occurs May 1–15. Members will be emailed instructions on how to vote.

Who is eligible to vote in the election?

Full and student members in good standing as of May 1 can vote. Associate members are not eligible to vote. Membership status must be current at the start of the election period. Nominees with the most votes will be elected to fill the open seats.

Results will be communicated via email to the nominees within about a week after the voting ends. They will be announced via ACES’ communication channels in late May.
