Scholarships reward six young editors

Six college students whose editing experience already covers a vast range of media have won a total of $10,000 in scholarships from ACES: The Society for Editing.
The top winner in the annual scholarship competition, Lori Sosa, is working on a master’s degree in publishing at George Washington University in Washington, DC. She previously graduated as an English language and literature major at Brigham Young University. Sosa is assistant managing editor of Friend magazine and has written and edited for a global audience.
Sosa’s scholarship is for $2,500. The other five students, each receiving a $1,500 scholarship, are:
Dana Foley, who is a senior in English and creative writing at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. She is a content and social media coordinator for Cat’s Cove Communications. Her accomplishments include editing a novel by the mayor of Perth, Ontario.
Lauren Hakimi, an English and history major at Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College (City University of New York). She revived and became editor in chief of the college’s only student-run news publication, and has also written news material for broadcast.
Olivia Loftis, an Emerson College student in Boston in the honors program in publishing. She is a poetry editor for the Emerson Review, has done travel multi-media editing in The Netherlands, and was assistant editor of the Writers Without Margins literary journal.
Steven Vargas, a University of Southern California student with a BA in theater (acting) and journalism who is pursuing a master’s in specialized journalism (the arts). He has been a multimedia journalist for Annenberg Media since 2016 and has managed a 384-member student newsroom.
Andrew Walter, a civil engineering major at the University of Texas. He edits for The Shorthorn, the student news publication that is a daily online newsletter, a weekly in print, a website and a breaking news source on social media.
To win an ACES scholarship is an honor in the field of editing and can provide crucial financial support. As winner Foley said, “Receiving this funding means that I will be able to apply to my graduate and continued education programs.… Thank you for everything that you do for students and editors like myself. Your kindness, generosity, and goodwill allow us to continue achieving our goals without compromise.”
