Senior Editor – The Urban Institute

The Urban Institute's dynamic Office of Communication seeks a senior editor to work on highly cited content that shapes national discussions of issues including housing, neighborhood development and sustainability, and factors that shape the quality of life in American communities. In addition to editing, this work entails project tracking/budgeting, consulting on high-level strategy, and adapting to changes in deadlines and team environments. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the Director of Editorial Services and Publications on departmental goals and procedures, and will work across Communications teams and research centers to ensure operations are integrated and connected. The senior editor will also lead or support implementation of editorial policies with organizational impact, on topics such as academic publishing, 508 compliance, inclusive language, or permissions.
The successful candidate will:
• Have a bachelor’s degree in English, Communications,or related social science field and at least seven years of related experience and/or training in copyediting and publications production; an advanced degree may substitute for some years of experience. Prior management experience is strongly preferred
• Possess strong project management skills, the ability to assign, prioritize, and schedule work for self and others while ensuring responsiveness and attention to detail. Experience managing vendors and freelancers is also helpful
• Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style (familiarity with other style guides is also helpful)
• Exhibit a keen, careful editorial eye; a firm grasp of English grammar and punctuation rules; and the ability to meet tight deadlines without sacrificing editorial quality
• Use the ability to translate complex content for general audiences
• Form positive relationships with a range of staff and with people of diverse backgrounds and experiences
• Display proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel, Adobe Acrobat. Experience with Smartsheet, JAMIS Prime, and content management systems (e.g., Drupal) a plus
