TWN is looking for a part-time copy editor to take a leading role in editing, fact-checking and number-checking content from the editorial team. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, comfortable working both independently and collaboratively and adept at editing content across a wide variety of subjects under deadline pressure.
The copy editor should do much more than spell-check the copy. They are the reader's advocate, so it's extremely important that they take the initiative to ask reporters any questions that would help the reader better understand the material.
This editor will copy edit TWN content to ensure it meets our high editorial standards of clarity, accuracy, inclusivity/sensitivity, and balance, as well as being free of typos and grammatical errors and adhering to TWN style.
The copy editor will be required to work from 3-7 p.m. (EST/EDT) Monday through Friday and may be needed on weekends.
What you'll do:
- Read, evaluate, and edit all unpublished works using the following criteria:
-- Clarity and accuracy
-- Adherence to best practices regarding sensitive topics and legal liability
-- Proper TWN style, spelling, and grammar
- Work with editors, staff writers, and freelancers to fully and thoroughly fact-check all content as submitted
- Use discretion and independent judgment to determine whether articles meet our standard for publication and work with senior team members to resolve potential problems
- Assist senior team members in setting publishing standards:
-- Be instrumental in setting and upholding standards, including developing training materials, providing best practices, and implementing site-wide corrections policies
-- Learn TWN style inside and out and serve as expert adviser for staff, including answering questions
-- Identify stylistic issues or inconsistencies and discuss with the team to determine a solution
