The Killeen Daily Herald is seeking a journalist who is a fast and thorough page designer and copy editor to join and manage our design/copy desk.The ideal candidate will be a team player, can multitask, learns quickly, works well under pressure and can work independently. He or she should have InDesign and Photoshop experience, as well. The applicant for this full-time job must have strong management, organizational and editing skills, a solid knowledge of the AP Stylebook and the ability to write reader-grabbing headlines, as well as design pages.
The designers/copy editors work in the newsroom, copy edit stories, pull wire stories, adjust for breaking news and coordinate with editors directly to produce high-quality community journalism. Our 3.5-person news desk is responsible for producing three weekly papers and seven daily paper each week and an occasional special section. Another 1.5 designers work on sports.
The desk manager’s responsibilities include providing desk staff schedules a month in advance for all tasks to be done, such as the Sunday advance sections and weekly papers.
Killeen Daily Herald staff members are required to live in or move to Killeen, Copperas Cove or Harker Heights, which are the main towns the Herald covers.
Killeen is west of Interstate 35 in central Texas, about an hour north of Austin.
