Night Copy Editor – Billings Gazette

Billings, MT

The Billings Gazette, the state’s largest newspaper, is in search of a night editor. We want someone who can read copy with a critical eye, and often brags to others about their organizational superpowers. This position is responsible for organizing the newspaper, making key decisions and striving to beat deadlines at night.

Daily duties include pulling wire stories, proofreading copy, headline writing, wrangling breaking news, approving pages for print, posting stories online and sharing content to social media. This person will work with other editors and writers ushering stories into print, polishing them and ferreting out errors in style and fact.

If InDesign is not your thing, no worries--the paper is designed offsite. We are in need of an eagle-eyed style/grammar all-star who is adaptable and digitally savvy. There are also occasional opportunities to write for our special publications. This shift is approximately 3 p.m. to midnight. You will work five days a week, with at least one weekend shift required.

The Gazette is an award-winning paper that stretches across two-thirds of the Big Sky State and down into the scenic Bighorn Basin of Wyoming. Billings is surrounded by natural beauty from the Rimrocks that ring the city to the mountains less than an hour south. If you like hiking, biking, skiing and getting outdoors, look no further: we were voted 'America's Best Town 2016' by Outside Magazine. Billings is big enough to have plenty of cultural opportunities, dining and retail, but small enough to know your neighbor.

Our staff at The Gazette is populated with very talented, often quirky and fiercely dedicated folks. If you want to be a part of this ecclectic mix, please send a cover letter, three references, and any work samples that demonstrate just how talented you are to
