Title: Managing Editor, Radio-based Newsroom
Employment Status: FT Exempt
Reports to: CEO or Managing Director
Supervises: Editorial staff including Assistant Managing Editor
This is a unique opportunity to lead an innovative and mission-driven virtual newsroom hosting a combination of veteran and newer-to-the field reporters, editors and others. With a smart and dedicated staff, the head of the newsroom nurtures a respectful and collaborative workplace that creates content serving thousands of other media outlets. The ideal candidate has years of commercial (or public) broadcast journalism, demonstrable leadership skills and a proven knack for management. This person is equally at home in the brainstorming and implementation phases, and is highly organized and uncannily good at tracking a myriad of details. In our times, this work is not for the faint-of-heart. Previous successful leaders in this position have been called brilliant and driven and we’re looking for one more thing - the desire, and ability, to help individuals and other news outlets reach their highest potential in service to the overarching goal of justice, compassion and a healthy, sustainable and vibrant democracy in highly turbulent times.
The Managing Editor (ME) is a senior strategic partner with editorial vision and supervisory skills who works closely with other senior managers to fulfill the organizational mission and editorial benchmarks. Directing a virtual newsroom of producer/reporters, editors and others, the ME ensures the newsroom adheres to defined internal controls to achieve those objectives. This position requires creativity, technical skills, and versatility such that the ME can themselves conceptualize, produce and/or edit various content as needed or desired, and represent and collaborate with other newsrooms and partners across the country. The ME helps recruit, hire, train, and retain staff and works closely with other senior managers to nurture a productive, collaborative and supportive newsroom.
