Manager, Scientific Editing (Biomedical Sciences)

Manages the work flowing through a small scientific editing department, including staff scheduling and assignments. Remote or hybrid (San Jose, CA or McLean, VA).


• Supervises, trains, and develops the editing staff.
• Creates and maintains style guidelines and templates to ensure efficient and consistent document preparation.
• Edits documents including Investigational New Drug applications, journal articles, protocols, tables, annual reports, special publications for clients, and other scientific documents, as well as Standard Operating Procedures and curricula vitae.
• Consults on and arbitrates matters of style and format. Provides editorial guidance and expertise to scientists and other staff.
• Edits documents for accuracy, formatting, and appropriate style. Checks content, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
• Ensures the quality of editing and formatting is maintained at a near-perfect standard.
• Generates reference lists from EndNote and edits bibliographies.
• Relies on experience, creativity, and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
• Additional responsibilities as assigned.


• Detailed knowledge of the AMA Manual of Style and The Chicago Manual of Style.
• Proficient in Word, Adobe Acrobat, and PowerPoint. Must have familiarity with the advanced functions of Word templates and styles.
• Excellent editorial and writing skills, grasp of grammar, attention to detail, and a fondness for words.
• Well organized and adaptable. Can re-prioritize in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
• Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and be diplomatic, self-assured, and flexible.
• Ability to work independently and supervise and develop a team.
• Familiarity with or ability to quickly grasp biomedical terminology.
• Working knowledge of SharePoint, EndNote, and 508 accessibility compliance are pluses.


• BA in English or science.
• Six or more years as a Senior or Managing Editor or other comparable position.
• Three or more years managing a business function and team.
