We are looking to build a stable of freelance proofreaders to help out during busy periods. Looking to fill one 10-month position (around May–February) and multiple proofreaders who are available for a few weeks at a time.
Job Description
Proofread and fact-check print and online material, including book catalogs, order forms, promotional copy, emails, website content, online ads, blog and social media posts, and book descriptions for online item-detail pages. Verify titles, cover images, authors, illustrators, page counts, awards, prices, and savings calculations. Prepare and check order forms for accuracy.
Job Qualifications/Requirements:
Top-notch proofreading skills with excellent command of American English and a firm sense of idiom.
Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style or AP Stylebook, standard proofreading symbols.
Must be able to achieve the highest degree of accuracy with quick turnaround and be able to juggle many projects concurrently.
College degree or equivalent. Several years of prior proofreading experience in book publishing, magazines, or advertising that required a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail, including the flawless application of correct grammar, usage, spelling, and syntax.
Must be a conscientious, autonomous self-starter with a strong work ethic. Be comfortable interacting with a wide variety of people in other departments, including marketing, editorial, design, promotions, and online production.
Knowledge of basic HTML and experience at a copy desk or copyediting dept. are pluses. As is competency in Spanish. Candidates will be asked to take a proofreading test.
