Freelance Digital Copy Editor – Texas Monthly




Texas Monthly has an immediate opening for a freelance copy editor on its website. The editor will work directly with the editorial director, editors, and writers to ensure the grammatical and stylistic accuracy of all its published work. This is a one-year contract position that would require 30 hours of work a week, with the potential to be extended beyond the one-year time period.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Copy editing articles for the website, including lightly fact-checking the text

Ensuring, in collaboration with the editorial director, that each article is properly tagged and optimized for search and social

Successful candidates will possess the following skills and capabilities:

A deep love for language and storytelling

A strong familiarity and expertise with Chicago style, as well as AP, Bryan Garner, Merriam Webster, and Words Into Type

A fastidiousness with regard to details, deadlines, and organization; calm under pressure

The ability to communicate clearly and diplomatically with parties of all sorts

Experience in journalism, writing, and reporting is preferred, as is fluency in Spanish and a general affinity for the state of Texas and its varied affairs

Education and experience:

A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field

Two to five years of copy editing experience

This role is a contract position with the opportunity to work remotely.
