The Getty Research Institute (GRI) seeks an experienced editor to ensure the accurate and timely editing of scholarly print and electronic books from manuscript through proofs. The editor’s duties include line editing; communicating with authors and translators; overseeing image permissions and reproducible art; overseeing freelance proofreaders and indexers; editing indexes; serving as a liaison between authors and production, design, and marketing staff; evaluating book interior and jacket designs; training junior staff and monitoring their work; and editing or repurposing promotional copy for catalog and dust jackets. The editor must also be detail-oriented; possess superior organizational skills; have a firm grasp of standard American English; and be able to work both independently and as part of a team. We are especially interested in candidates with experience editing scholarly books with large art programs.Major Job Responsibilities: •Provides editorial project management for print and digital publications in a wide range of genres and at all levels of complexity•Collaborates closely with colleagues in Design and Production to establish schedule and track progress against schedule and budget•Maintains project records and reports on project status•Under supervision of manager, oversees the work of various consultants, including translators, proofreaders, and indexers•Works with Rights Coordinator to ensure that illustrations can be acquired and transmitted according to scheduleQualifications: •Bachelor's degree in the humanities (preferably in English or Art History); MA preferred•At least 5 years of relevant publishing experience, preferably including 3 years in either a museum or university press environment
