Copy Chief – Better Homes & Garden/Meredith Corporation

The Better Homes & Garden/Special Interest Magazine Copy Chief is an advocate for the reader in shaping stories according to the vision of the editor-in-chief. This person edits all copy submitted for clarity, accuracy, grammar, punctuation, spelling, voice, and style.

Essential Job Functions:

60% - Reads and edits copy for Better Homes and Gardens print and tablet editions and website to ensure that it is accurate and grammatically correct, easy to read and understand, and written in a friendly, conversational way. Checks accuracy of all page references and URLs. Writes the table of contents for each print issue of BHG. Proofreads SIM layouts as needed.

20% - Supervises two staff copy editors. Assigns lead copy editing duties for SIM titles. Schedules and contracts with freelance copy editors as needed.

10% - Communicates regularly with managing editor, production editor, creative director, and managing design director to ensure smooth copy flow throughout editorial production cycle. Processes copy in a timely manner.

10% - Assist Managing Editor with additional SIM support due to reorganization

Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements | All must be met to be considered.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or Communications or equivalent training and/or experience.

Experience: At least eight years professional experience with an emphasis in copy editing. Management experience required.

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must be conversant with current editorial usages and trends across print and digital platforms and be able to recognize and apply various writing styles.
Experience using page-layout software such as Adobe InDesign and Web software such as CQ. Expert Macintosh user.
