Assistant Professor of Book Publishing – Emerson College

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Primary teaching responsibilities will include developing and teaching introductory to advanced-level undergraduate and graduate book publishing courses in both the residential and online programs. The current curriculum includes overview courses on the book publishing process and industry, as well as more specialized courses in areas such as editing, design, production, management, entrepreneurship, marketing, sales, publicity, and law. Additional responsibilities include academic advising, student mentorship, assisting in the admissions process, and serving on department and college committees


The ideal candidate will have significant professional experience in the book publishing industry (such as in trade publishing for adults and/or children, academic/scholarly publishing, or professional publishing) and teaching experience in a professional or academic setting. A master's degree in publishing, journalism, or a related field is preferred. Candidates must have a demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues and/or students from diverse backgrounds. The ideal candidate will possess a keen and developed awareness of the issues around inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility in the publishing industry, the teaching profession, and the classroom; candidates should demonstrate a commitment to addressing these issues in all of their courses and a willingness to adapt and expand their pedagogy as the cultural conversation around representation, privilege-based difference, and inclusive excellence continues to evolve.
