Assistant Managing Editor, Policy and Politics – Education Week

Location:

Bethesda, MD 20814

Description:

The Assistant Managing Editor, Policy and Politics role for Education Week is a vital position in our news operation as these editors are most directly responsible for planning coverage and guiding our reporting efforts. In our newsroom, each Assistant Managing Editor is responsible for supervising 2-4 reporters while acting as our resident expert on one of the five main audience groups we serve (school district leaders, principals, teachers, policy and industry leaders, and higher education professionals).

We are looking for an editor who understands K-12 education and can articulate a vision for coverage on topics that are fresh, insightful, highly relevant and geared to the K-12 professional audience. Specifically, this Assistant Managing Editor will oversee, among other topics, our coverage of school leadership, school finance, and how government policies and politics at all levels impact and influence K-12 education.

The Assistant Managing Editor, Policy and Politics will be equally capable of driving daily stories off education-related news, studies and trends while working to produce deep-dive enterprise projects, series, and special reports. This editor will also collaborate closely with reporters and our business-side colleagues to help shape live and virtual events.

At Education Week, we believe all children—regardless of their race, gender, income, ZIP code, or other factors—have the right to a highly effective and high-quality education. We also believe that our nation’s historic racism against people who are Black, Latino, Asian, and Indigenous has deeply influenced public education in a range of ways, from a patchwork funding system that sustains inequity of resources to echoing and perpetuating cultural biases in classrooms and curricula. We have long highlighted these impacts as a core tenet of our mission and recognize that our organization – and audiences -- must understand these influences more deeply.
