Acquisitions Editor – Oncology Nursing Society




The Acquisitions Editor oversees content development and sales of print and electronic technical books, guidelines, and standards. Identifies oncology nursing trends and hot topics, determine topics for publication, and prepares proposals for new and revised edition books. Manages annual book and journal subscriptions budget and publication sales to wholesalers, retailers, and content aggregators. Meets deadlines, budgets, and quality standards for all publications.

Remote opportunity - This is a full-time remote (work from home) position. Occasional travel to the ONS Headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA throughout the year will be required.


Create and implement annual book acquisitions and publishing plan in partnership with publisher
Interprets publishing needs of ONS members and oncology nurses
Recruits and signs editor and author candidates for books and other media
Communicates with authors/editors throughout book development
Maintains author/editor survey data and compiles satisfaction score
Tracks book sales and sets annual book budget
Prepares acquisitions budget including cost analysis and per-title financial assessment prior to contracting books
Supervises proposal peer review process for content, merit, and marketability
Manages revision process
Completes final review of manuscript
Secures permissions and pertinent artwork
Tracks manuscript submission timeline from contract signing to manuscript submission
Prepares manuscript proposals for publisher approval
Negotiates contracts with book editors and authors
Revises books and related products based on sales volume as needed
Recommends out-of-print decisions to publisher
Initiates phase-out process
Manages contracts and agreements with book and journal content resellers and book distribution sales partners
Manages journal subscription accounts for institutional customers (e.g. medical libraries)
Online journal access
Demonstrates and supports a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion

Qualifications and Skills
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, business, or nursing
4-7 years of book acquisitions experience in medical or technical publishing
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical books and journals
