Running for secretary (also running for board seat at-large as the incumbent)
About Heather's work: Heather E. Saunders, owner of Just the Write Type, is a proofreader and STEM/medical editor.
How long have you been an ACES member? I’ve been an ACES member since 2014, when I joined to attend the conference in Las Vegas.
How have you contributed to ACES: My first contribution was as co-manager of the ACES Freelancer Directory, which became Editors for Hire, a valuable offering for freelance members. Since then I’ve taught boot camps, presented conference sessions, organized #ACESchats, served as communications committee chair, co-planned the Providence session line-up, and helped facilitate moving ACES 2020 online.
Why you feel you are the best candidate for this position: I endeavor to ensure ACES is inclusive, welcoming, and supportive—a recent example is initiating the use of pronoun stickers at conferences—and a source of guidance and camaraderie for editors. I’m proud to serve on the board and I’d like to continue doing so as secretary.
What you envision for ACES during your tenure: I’m excited to continue strengthening our vibrant community and championing editors. I’d like to see ACES expand how it supports members, editors, and the industry by backing research and developing programs that advocate for the field, specifically the importance of editing, industry standards and rates, and diversity in editing.
What is one thing about ACES that you would like to improve, and what ideas do you have on how to improve it? One of the best things about ACES is the sense of connection—spending time with other members is usually uplifting and rewarding. I’d like to look for new opportunities to expand and improve connection and community-building opportunities outside of the yearly conference. This includes providing a platform that gives members the opportunity to share perspectives and resources, refine skills and best practices, strengthen networks and relationships, and seek support and guidance.
