Emily Brewster has covered all kinds of vocabulary and usage, from ‘a’ to ‘zuke,’ since joining Merriam-Webster in 2000 as a general definer and current Senior Editor. In addition to her defining work, she writes about words and their exploits at, is cohost of Merriam-Webster’s “Word Matters” podcast, and speaks to audiences about lexicography and language in person (pandemics permitting) and as a regular guest on WRSI, a radio station in western Massachusetts. Not a fan of “free time,” Emily instead has two young children and co-owns a small pub with an eclectic and carefully proofread menu.
