The ACES national conference is a crazy, fun weekend full of networking, reconnecting, learning and professional growth. It can feel hectic at times, so we've compiled descriptions of some of the non-session events happening that weekend, so you don't miss anything you're interested in! See you in Chicago. - ACES team

Great Bosses Boot Camp 

9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Wednesday

Jill Geisler, head of Jill Geisler Leadership, LLC, will present a fun and interactive workshop based on her experience training newsroom leaders on performance management. You’ll learn:

8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Thursday – Saturday

Stop by to meet the sponsors! Acquire some new editing swag and learn about how these organizations support editors and the editing profession. Coffee will also be served in this area each morning. As if you needed any more motivation!

ACES Spelling Bee 

5 to 6:30 p.m., Thursday

Spelling and editors: Perfect together. Join us for the fifth annual ACES Spelling Bee. Watch 15 of your colleagues struggle through a list of words created by the Scripps National Spelling Bee just for us, in hopes of winning great prizes supplied by Lingofy and others. It costs $10 to watch and $25 to spell (if there's still room for spellers). All funds raised go to ACES scholarships.

Opening Night Reception
6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Red Lacquer Room 

After the Spelling Bee, mix and mingle with fellow attendees while enjoying generous appetizers and a cash bar. (Your first drink is on us!)

Silent Auction
4:30 to 7 p.m., Friday

Wouldn't you just love a hand-sewn semicolon quilt? A year of the Chicago Manual of Style online? Or a mug that says "I'm an Editor. What's Your Superpower?"? (Note the copy editor-specific punctuation there.) All these and much, much more will be available during our annual silent auction to raise money for scholarships. Tell us what you're bringing, then bring it (or send it).

Keynote Speaker Lynne Murphy
7 - 9:30 p.m., Friday

Lynne Murphy,  as an American linguist in England, embraces that role with a long-running and popular blog, media appearances and now a book, “The Prodigal Tongue,” due out in the spring. She will give her keynote speech during the banquet Friday evening.

6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Saturday

Socialize with friends new and old, as we toast another successful conference! Join us at the Chicago Athletic Association, 12 S. Michigan Ave. (0.7 miles from the Palmer House.)
